| Europeana v1.0 Europeana v1.0 is a project funded by the European Commission's eContentplus programme, which will transform the Europeana.eu portal from a prototype into a fully operational site. To achieve this goal, Europeana v1.0 is working towards two key upgrades of Europeana.eu, called Rhine and Danube. The Rhine release will bring new features to Europeana, including a refined search engine, in summer 2010. In this year, Europeana v1.0 also aims to increase the number of searchable objects on Europeana.eu to over 10 million. More than 5 million items have already been contributed. The Danube version is scheduled for spring 2011 and will improve Europeana.eu with multilingual functions and semantic web features. Developing APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) is another key part of the Europeana v1.0 mission. These APIs will allow cultural institutions and content providers to use items from Europeana on their own sites, broadening exposure to the Europeana collection while still retaining links to the original source of the material. In all of its endeavours, Europeana v1.0 aims to build open source solutions and reuse technologies developed in related Commission-funded projects. About 150 partners are helping Europeana v1.0 to achieve these goals. Museums, libraries, archives, audiovisual collections and universities are among the groups working with Europeana v1.0 and many also contribute content to the main Europeana site.
